Seven Clubs, One Identity, One Ambition

The January transfer window has slammed shut across Europe, and once again there has been little chance for anyone involved in the V Sports Network to catch their breath. While the summer focused on rebuilding squads and establishing long-term pathways, this winter has been about fine tuning each project as the campaigns enter their decisive stages. Across England, Portugal and France, all three European clubs remain firmly on course to achieve their objectives, while GAIS have already completed another remarkable year in Sweden and immediately turned their attention towards building a squad capable of competing both domestically and in Europe. As always, every decision has been made with the wider network in mind. Players have moved permanently, youngsters have stepped up through the loan system, and another wave of elite African talent has entered the project.

Aston Villa

Still Fighting On Every Front

Although Liverpool and Arsenal have opened up a nine-point advantage in the Premier League title race, Aston Villa remain firmly in control of their own destiny. Sitting third in the table with a five-point cushion over fifth place, Yaya Touré’s side are once again looking well placed to secure Champions League qualification. Considering Villa are competing on four fronts, consistency has been extremely impressive. While the title may now require help from elsewhere, another season amongst Europe’s elite would represent another huge step forward for both the club and the V Sports project. Cup competitions have once again provided memorable moments. Villa produced an attacking masterclass to demolish Brentford 8-3 on aggregate and book their place in the Carabao Cup Final where Liverpool await. The FA Cup defence came to an end with a disappointing 3-1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur, ending hopes of retaining last season’s trophy, but attention quickly shifted back towards Europe. The Champions League campaign has also been a success. Strong performances throughout the league phase secured qualification for the knockout rounds, where Bayer Leverkusen now stand between Villa and the last sixteen.

The Stars Continue To Deliver

The attacking unit assembled over the past eighteen months continues to justify every penny invested. Karl Etta Eyong has settled into English football superbly, scoring 18 goals already in all competitions and providing the physical focal point the squad needed. Amadou Onana has arguably become one of the Premier League’s most complete midfielders, contributing an outstanding 17 goals and 9 assists from midfield while dominating games both physically and technically. Despite spending much of the season being rotated, Ollie Watkins continues to prove invaluable with 14 goals and 8 assists whenever called upon. Morgan Rogers has developed into one of the league’s most dangerous attacking players, registering 13 goals and 8 assists, while Ismael Saibari has arguably been Villa’s creative heartbeat with 11 goals and an incredible 14 assists. New signing Noah Sadiki has adapted seamlessly, already contributing 5 goals and 14 assists, while Pape Matar Sarr continues his excellent progression with 8 goals and 7 assists from midfield.

Collectively, it is perhaps the strongest attacking group Villa have possessed under the V Sports ownership.

January Business

Unlike many rivals, Aston Villa resisted the temptation to strengthen further. The recruitment team felt the squad already possessed enough quality to compete on every front, instead choosing to generate funds through player sales.

Emiliano Buendía returned from his loan spell at River Plate before completing a permanent €38.5 million move to Leeds United, ending his Villa career after several important contributions. Kosta Nedeljkovic departed for Leicester City in a €12.5 million deal, while Yasin Özcan returned to Turkey with Beşiktaş paying €4.6 million. Perhaps the most difficult departure emotionally was Omar Khedr. Following two outstanding development loans at Real Unión and GAIS, the Egyptian attracted significant Premier League interest before Fulham secured his signature for €9.25 million. It is another example of the V Sports development model working exactly as intended.

Yaya Touré: “We’re in another fantastic position. Everyone wants to talk about the title, but our objective remains qualifying for the Champions League every single season. If we keep doing that, trophies will continue to come. This group still has a huge second half of the season ahead of them.”

Vitória SC

Still Dreaming Of History

For the second consecutive season Vitória find themselves firmly involved in the Portuguese title race. Currently third, Benni McCarthy’s side trail Sporting CP by four points, while surprise package Santa Clara sit between them in second, just two points ahead. More importantly, Vitória have established a healthy six-point gap over Benfica, putting Champions League qualification firmly in their own hands. After last season’s late collapse, nobody inside the club is getting carried away. Domestically, Vitória remain alive in the Taça de Portugal and have reached the semi-finals, while European football continues after qualifying for the UEFA Europa Conference League knockout stages where Polish side Raków await. The foundations laid over the past two seasons are becoming increasingly obvious.

Franculino Is Unstoppable

Few strikers anywhere in Europe can match Franculino’s numbers. The Aston Villa loanee has exploded once again, scoring an incredible 30 goals alongside 5 assists in just 35 appearances. Behind him, Kamory Doumbia has completely justified becoming the club’s record signing, producing 13 goals and 14 assists in an outstanding first season. Harouma Dijibrin continues his rapid development with 12 goals and 14 assists, while Relebohile Mofokeng has elevated his game to another level, contributing 6 goals and 15 assists. Arthur Avom Ebong has added another dimension from midfield, registering 5 goals and 10 assists.

It is an attacking unit capable of troubling anyone.

January Business

Vitória made only minor departures, with Miguel Maga joining Racing for €925,000 before Rodrigo Abascal completed a €500,000 move to Nacional.

The recruitment focus instead centred around preparing both for the title race and the club’s long-term future.

Mbekezeli Mbokazi

Vitória moved quickly to secure one of African football’s brightest defensive prospects. The 21-year-old South African centre-back arrives from Chicago Fire for €10 million and immediately adds pace, athleticism and composure to McCarthy’s back line. Comfortable defending large spaces and equally capable playing through pressure, Mbokazi fits perfectly into the V Sports defensive blueprint.

Oumar Camara

Deadline day also brought another elite academy investment. Only 16 years old, Guinean winger Oumar Camara joins from Auxerre for €1.5 million. Widely regarded as one of West Africa’s finest young attacking prospects, the expectation is that patience and careful development will eventually turn him into another success story within the network.

Benni McCarthy: “We were in a very similar position twelve months ago and we let it slip. That experience has stayed with all of us. This season we want to keep improving, stay in the title race for as long as possible and most importantly bring Champions League football back to Vitória.”

Annecy

Defying Expectations

Life in Ligue 1 was always expected to be difficult. Instead, Michel Essien’s newly promoted side have shown tremendous resilience throughout the first half of the campaign. Annecy currently sit two points above the relegation zone and, perhaps even more impressively, have not occupied the bottom three since the opening weekend of the season. Every point earned has been deserved, with the squad refusing to compromise its identity despite facing significantly stronger opposition each week. A place in the Coupe de France quarter-finals has only added to an already encouraging campaign.

Abdelkarim Leading The Way

Hamza Abdelkarim has adapted to Ligue 1 immediately. The Aston Villa loanee has scored 14 goals already and looks increasingly capable of becoming Villa’s next first-team striker. Joe Aribo’s experience has also proved invaluable, leading the squad creatively with eight assists while helping the younger players settle into top-flight football. Goals and assists have otherwise been shared throughout the squad, demonstrating the collective nature of Essien’s team.

January Business

Annecy trimmed the squad during January. Moïse Shal Dion completed a €1.4 million move to Braunschweig, Paul Venot left for Laval following the expiry of his contract, while Kilyan Jusseron-Veniere joined Clermont for €20,000.

The biggest arrival was one already familiar to V Sports supporters.

Alysson Edward joins on loan following his outstanding season at GAIS, bringing proven creativity and goals to help Annecy secure survival. The recruitment team also continued investing aggressively in youth, signing Angolan defender Zacarias Quitongo, Algerian midfielder Omar Benmoussa, Guinean midfielder Carlos Soares and Moroccan attacking midfielder Mouad Sekkat. All four represent long-term investments that fit perfectly within the V Sports philosophy.

Michel Essien: “The objective hasn’t changed. We want to stay in Ligue 1. If we achieve that, everything else becomes possible. Survival comes first, then we can start thinking about taking the next step.”

GAIS

Building For Europe

Fresh from qualifying for the UEFA Europa Conference League, GAIS entered January with a very different challenge. The Swedish registration rules require clubs to develop home-trained players, meaning the recruitment team identified this window as the perfect opportunity to aggressively target elite African teenagers who can eventually qualify as club-trained talent. Rather than chasing short-term fixes, every signing has been made with both European competition and the club’s long-term future in mind.

Outgoing business saw Axel Henriksson join Southampton for €1.3 million, while Max Andersson departed for Lyngby in a deal worth €180,000.

Boubacar Traoré

The headline arrival is experienced Malian midfielder Boubacar Traoré.

Signed from Wolverhampton Wanderers for €1 million, the former Metz midfielder brings leadership, physicality and European experience that should immediately improve GAIS’ midfield.

Ahmed Khaled

Nineteen-year-old Egyptian winger Ahmed Khaled joins from Paralimni for €1.2 million.

Highly technical and blessed with explosive acceleration, GAIS believe he can become their long-term solution on the right flank.

Ibrahim El Nagaawy

With Alysson Edward moving to France, Vitória youngster Ibrahim El Nagaawy arrives on loan. Still only eighteen, the Egyptian offers pace, creativity and direct running, making him an ideal replacement while continuing his own development within the network.

Neo Bohloko

South African striker Neo Bohloko completes the first-team additions. Signed from Kaizer Chiefs for €500,000, the eighteen-year-old arrives following the departures of Ben Hamed Touré and Kparaobo Arierhi and will be given every opportunity to establish himself.

Another Outstanding Youth Recruitment Drive

The long-term strategy remained just as important as first-team recruitment.

Defensively, Ivorian Mederick Obli, Malian Kaba Dembele and South African Zeke Felix strengthen the centre-back options, while Houngue Abagli, Charles Diakite, Kalifa Saidykhan and Diaw Loppy provide exciting competition at full-back.

Cape Verde international Gianni Reis offers enormous potential on the left, while midfield additions Mamadou Faye and Siphamandla Ngwenya bring intelligence and athleticism through the centre.

Further forward, Mouhamed Diop joins as one of Senegal’s brightest wide prospects, while Honore Boukari, Nuno Tavares and Mohammed El Harrak complete another hugely impressive recruitment class at centre forward.

It represents yet another statement of intent regarding the future of GAIS.

John Obi Mikel: “Last season proved what this club is capable of. Now we have to build on it. Europe is exciting, but our responsibility is making sure GAIS stays successful for many years. These young players are the future of this football club.”

Looking Ahead

The V Sports Network enters the second half of the 2026/27 season in perhaps its strongest position yet. Aston Villa remain firmly on course for another Champions League campaign while competing for domestic silverware. Vitória continue to challenge Portugal’s traditional giants in both league and cup competitions while dreaming of Champions League qualification. Annecy are exceeding expectations in their first Ligue 1 campaign and have given themselves every chance of securing survival. Meanwhile, GAIS have already laid the foundations for another exciting chapter after qualifying for European football and continuing to assemble one of the most exciting collections of young African talent anywhere in world football.

The identity of the project remains unchanged. Invest in elite African talent, develop players through a connected multi-club pathway, strengthen every club both on and off the pitch, and ensure that each success creates opportunities for the next generation. As the decisive months of the season approach, every club still has meaningful objectives to fight for, and together they continue to demonstrate exactly what the V Sports model was designed to achieve.
